The first teaser trailer for The Uninvited has hit the internets and despite the fact that it's a remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters (one of my favorite movies of all time) and the fact that it looks incredibly lame, I can't seem to manage any sort of emotional reaction. You can watch the trailer on YouTube or you can download the HD version here in trailer_spot's LJ. I don't know. Anymore it seems like a waste of time/attention to get upset about these things. Having said that, here's to hoping the film falls flat on it's face and loses a lot of money. Cheers! Tags: remakes

I swear to god, one day I will be caught up. • Some time ago, it was widely reported that the Weinstein Company had acquired the rights to the Thai action flick Chocolate (read my review), but apparently that was either not the case or they have relinquished those rights and now Magnolia has the rights. This is seriously fantastic news. Especially the part that says the film will be released theatrically in 2009.• A fantastic interview with writer Greg Rucka can and should be read here. LOTS of Queen & Country talk. • This is the poster for The Uninvited, aka the American remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters: I don't know why I bother to mention that. Does anyone care at this point? • Akira is coming out on Blu-Ray in February! • An interview with Chuck Palahniuk about the film version of Choke can be read over here. The Lady and I saw the film a couple of days ago and we both enjoyed it quite a bit. It made me want to re-read the book again, so I think I'll do that as soon as I'm done with Kafka On The Shore. That's what I got right now. I would say that I'll be updating again soon, but you and I both know that the chances of that being true are currently slim. Tags: comics, dvd news, movie news, remakes

EXACTLY what I needed today. Remember way back in September when it was being reported that Hong Kong director Johnnie To ( Exiled, Election) was "talking" to Chow Yun Fat about the two of them doing a movie together? Remember how fucking awesome that sounded? Well, according to The Golden Rock, this article here and this article here, both say that those plans are progressing. Neither of those sites are in English, so we'll have to take their word for it. It says that To is going to start shooting his english film debut, a remake of the French film Le Cercle Rouge by John Pierre Melville, in June, starring Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Chow Yun Fat, although apparently only Orlando Bloom has signed on and Liam and CYF are still in talks. Still. It looks like this is actually going to happen. FUCK YES. Tags: awesometown, chow yun fat, movie news, remakes

Two brand spankin' new instances of studio interference that piss me off. 1) Matthew Kassovitz has a new film coming out soon that I've mentioned here a few times called Babylon A.D.. The film is of interest to me, mostly, because Michelle Yeoh is in it, alongside Vin Diesel, Gérard Depardieu and others. It is also of interest to me because of Matthew Kassovitz because his film La Haine is fucking genius and I haven't given up on him even if he did that Halle Berry movie Gothika. According to Twitch, Fox is cutting OVER 70 MINUTES OF THE FILM for it's release everywhere except, it seems, certain parts of Europe. The movie has been dwindled down from two hours and forty minutes to ninety minutes. In addition to this, the 90 minute version has been submitted to the BBFC (the UK's version of the MPAA) and they have rated it 12A, the equivalent to PG. Unfuckingbelievable. 2) Bloody Disgusting is reporting that French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury have been taken out of the director's chair for the upcoming Hellraiser remake by Dimension Pictures (a division of The Weinstein Company). You might be thinking "who gives a shit about this remake?", but allow me to remind you that Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are the people responsible for the recently released French horror film Inside(aka À l'intérieur), which, tragically, I still have not seen. Given the number of positive reviews I've read of it and that many of those reviews were from people I generally trust in this area, the idea of the two of them remaking ANYTHING is really not that bad. As of now, the details of their departure seem to be unknown, but... this is bad news, kids. Tags: movie news, remakes, weaksauce Current Music: Nurse With Wound "Intravenous"

• Official Reminder: This comes out tomorrow. Oh baby! Amazon is selling it for less than $50, too. • Twitch has found english subtitled trailers for the upcoming Thai martial arts awesome-fest Chocolate (which I previously mentioned here) as well as Stephen Chow's newest, CJ7. • Some stills have surfaced from the upcoming remake of the Thai horror film Shutter, starring Joshua Jackson and... some of them actually look alright. ( Cut for creepy/gross )It's been a little while since I saw the film, but those last two don't look like they're referencing anything from the original, do they? I don't remember seeing anything like that in it. • Speaking of remakes, I keep seeing the trailer for The Eye, with Jessica Alba. Even though I have little/no desire to see the film, does it bother anyone else that they give away one of the movie's biggest and best reveals in the trailer? It's such a great, unexpected moment in the original and they put it in the fucking trailer? Lame. • Speaking of lame, the Weinsteins are at it again. They're releasing Feng Xiaogang's recent mertial arts period drama The Banquet on DVD in February under the ridiculous and completely inappropriate title Legend Of The Black Scorpion. What The Fuck? Did they pick that title of out a hat?! Ugh. I won't bother ranting about it. You know. I didn't care much for the movie, anyway. I'm pretty sure there was more I was going to mention, but I have forgotten. Tags: dvd news, movie news, remakes

• Johnny To's newest film, Mad Detective, is getting a U.S. release on June 25, 2008. Johnny To being the man behind Exiled and the Election movies, among others. • ohnotheydidnt has scans from the Empire magazine with all the Batman: The Dark Knight stuff in it, so you can read it without having to pay $10 for the magazine (if you're in the US) or spend 45 minutes reading it in Borders. • If you haven't been keeping up with the news regarding the remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters, Sci-Fi Japan has a nice overview of everything that is knowable. • This is a very, very old picture of Michelle Yeoh and Jackie Chan recently posted in michelle_daily: It makes me happy. Here are some things that you may or may find some interest in. • Jason Bateman is trying really hard to get Mitch Hurwitz to write an Arrested Development movie.• Did you know Mike Patton did the vocals for the "creatures" in the upcoming film I Am Legend? I think I might have heard that somewhere and forgot? Maybe? Or maybe I didn't. • According to the official movie website, Stephen Chow's newest film CJ7 will be opening in the US on Januray 11th of 2008. WEEKS EARLIER THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD! THANK YOU, SONY!!!!!There is a trailer on the official website, by the way. • Coming Soon.net has three stills from the upcoming remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters. All three are of the sisters. • Twitch has the first trailer for the upcoming Machine Girl film. It... uh... it... IT LOOKS LIKE THE GREATEST FILM EVER MADE. • Here's the first picture of Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle in the upcoming Punisher: War Zone film. Due to hit theaters in September 2008. • Paper Magazine has an interview with Juno star Ellen Page on their website. Took them long enough. Everyone else already has one. Including Coming Soon but DO NOT READ THAT ONE if you haven't seen the movie and care about spoilers. That interview, does, though, link to two previous interviews they did with Ellen. One for Hard Candy and one for the upcoming An American Crime, which is based on the "true story of 16-year-old Sylvia Likens, who in 1965 was tortured to death by her demented caretaker, Gertrude Baniszewski (played by Catherine Keener in the film)". Coming Soon also has an interview with Jason Reitman, director of Juno. Ok, that's it for now. I'll post the rest later. Tags: movie news, remakes

Dag nabbit. How soon is "soon"?? Because I'm ready for this movie RIGHT NOW. Tadanobu Asano as Genghis Khan? I don't even care about who is directing it or who else is in it. • It's official, I guess. Christian Bale IS going to be in Terminator 4, but he will not be playing John Connor or a Terminator. He'll be a new character. • If you haven't seen it yet, The Joker is on the cover of the new Empire magazine. I guess this is a big deal because a lot of people haven't seen what he looks like in full costume yet? I could have sworn I'd seen a picture before, though. If you want a bigger scan, click here. • Old school, radical, controversial Japanese filmmaker Koji Wakamatsu has a new film coming out called United Red Army about a real 1970's Japanese terrorist group. The trailer has been YouTubed. I haven't watched it yet, but Variety loved it and the score for it was done by Sonic Youth's Jim O'Rourke, so I will be watching that trailer as soon as I get a chance. • Gong Li has signed up for yet another American film. This time, it's a period film called Shanghai where she will likely star opposite John Cusack (who is in talks). The film is about "n American who returns to a corrupt, Japanese-occupied Shanghai four months before Pearl Harbor and discovers his friend has been killed. While he unravels the mysteries of the death, he falls in love and discovers a much larger secret that his own government is hiding." It's going to be directed by 1408 director Mikael Hafstrom and produced by the Weinstein Company. I never saw 1408 (and never really had much desire to), but the combo of Gong Li and John Cusack is... interesting. • There's a new trailer out for the remake of The Eye, starring Jessica Alba, but I have no desire to watch it. Do you? • I'm going to post this picture of Kang Ho-Song because of his hair and because he's so fucking awesome. That's him with his Secret Sunshine co-star Jeon Do-yeon. Secret Sunshine is Korea's entry for the Academy Awards this year. I hope it gets nominated, even though I've not yet seen it. It played at AFI Fest this year, but I didn't get to see it because it was playing at times that were not compatible with my schedule. A true, honest to god, travesty of justice, in my opinion. • This is a little old, but there is a trailer for The Forbidden Kingdom out now, too. This being the first film to ever have both Jackie Chan and Jet Li in it together. It also has fight choreography from Yuen Woo-Ping, who is like unto a God in my heart. The film is in English and is supposed to be family friendly (it's directed by the guy who did Stuart Little, for god's sake), but the trailer doesn't look too bad. I guess we'll see. That be it for now. Tags: movie news, remakes Current Music: Underworld "Crocodile"

The shiz! • Want to hear something that blows ass? Fox is developing an American version of the British TV show Spaced. You know, that absolutely brilliant Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost British TV show? Yeah, that one. This tidbit has an Adgy rating of "Fucking Horseshit". But, Adgy, you say! They've done this with shows like The Office and it's great! Well, hey, sure, but Ricky Gervais (co-director, co-writer and star of the UK version) and Stephen Merchant (co-director, co-writer of the UK version) are actively involved in the US version. And they've got good people working on that show. Not so for Spaced thus far. In fact, Spaced director Edgar Wright has stated on his MySpace that neither he nor co-writer/star Simon Pegg were ever contacted about this. And what's even WORSE is that the American version is apparently going to be produced by Adam Barr ( Will & Grace) and McG!!!! UGH. • In somewhat better news, IGN has some of the first stills from the upcoming movie adaption of Mark Millar and J.G. Jones comic book Wanted, starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman and directed by Timur Bekmambetov ( Nightwatch). I'm really looking forward to this. If you haven't read the graphic novel yet, I highly recommend it. It's good fun. • Did you know Jet Li has a blog? Well, he does. He's currently shooting the third Mummy film and based on his most recent entry, he doesn't seem to think much of it. He said much the same about the upcoming The Forbidden Kingdom, too. • Apparently, Warner Brothers is STILL trying to get a live action adaptation of Akira off the ground. I bet you can all guess how I feel about that... • I don't know how many of you have ohnotheydidnt on your friends list. I'm guessing there's a few of you. For those of you not familiar with it, it's a huge community dedicated to entertainment news. It has 50,000 members, and those are just the people with LJs. Anyway, most of the billions of posts there are shit and a waste of space for me. It's because of that damn community that I know who Zack Efron is (but I bet I still don't know how to spell his name right) and who Vanessa Hudgins is and I know that Halle Berry is pregnant and Britney Spears' new album comes out today. All that. It's like a tabloid, but bigger. But. Occasionally, you find a diamond in the rough on that community. As I did today. Star Wars.com interview with Skinny Puppy lead singer Ogre. And all of a sudden scrolling past all that unnecessary bullshit is worthwhile. You know? I've got one other thing I wanted to post, but it'll have to wait. Tags: movie news, music news, remakes

Going to try and get through this quick because there are other things what need doin'. • Yahoo Movies has the first theatrical trailer for the upcoming remake of The Eye, starring Jessica Alba. The trailer actually doesn't look half bad, IMO, but that doesn't change anything. • Deep Discount DVD is having a sale on all of it's Ryko-distributed titles, including the films released on Synapse, and including pre-orders!!!! Most of them are available for less than $15! Go get some! • The other day I wrote about yet another awesome Sonny Chiba boxset on it's way from BCI Eclipse ( Amazon link ). Here's the cover art: Looks fucking badass, if you ask me. And, remember, it'll probably cost you less than $20. VIVA CHIBA! That be it for the right now. Tags: dvd news, movie news, remakes

I don't know how Tom Petty's "Last Dance With Mary Jane" got stuck in my head, but it did. • Stephen Chow has finished shooting and is in post-production on his new film, A Hope/ CJ7/ Yangtze River 7 (depending on what you're reading), which is going to be about some combination of aliens, kids and teachers. Different people say it's about different things, but it always involves those three. Anyway, CriEnglish has a bunch of stills (that they're calling "posters") for the new movie. The movie is due out in January 2008 over there. Not sure when it'll hit the US or anywhere else, but Sony Pictures has the rights, and after the success of Kung Fu Hustle, that's a good thing. CriEnglish says we should all be seeing a trailer for it sometime this month. • Ang Lee's newest film, Lust, Caution opened last weekend in New York, on only one screen, and made $61,688, breaking the per-screen average record for the debut of a foreign film. In one theater. Over one weekend. A foreign language film, rated NC-17, made over sixty thousand dollars. The movie opens in LA on Friday, and I'm hoping to talk The Lady into going down there Friday night to see it. • The rights have been picked up for a remake of David Cronenberg's Brood. Boooooooooo! I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to decide to remake an older Cronenberg movie. I really hope it falls through. VERY enjoyable film, I thought. • I have written and will continue to write about the upcoming The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, no matter what I think it will come out looking like. Any movie with Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, Isabella Leong and Maria Bello is one I'm going to pay attention to. Anyway, director Rob Cohen has a blog for the film and recently posted some pictures. One of Brendan Fraser, one of Maria Bello (taking Rachel Weisz's place) and another of Michelle Yeoh and Isabella Leong kickin' it. Apparently, Jet Li just arrived on set. That's all of that for right now. Tags: movie news, remakes

There's a lot of stuff to post, and I'm going to try to catch up quickly. • One of the bajillion movies I am really looking forward to is the upcoming live action film adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire. It starring Jeon Ji-hyun (under the 'Americanized' name Gianna Jun) and Koyuki, which is, really, all I need to know to want to see it. It's also being directed by Chris Nahon ( Kiss Of The Dragon) which doesn't really add anything to my desire but I felt like mentioning. I don't know if it's going to be any good, I just know I want to see the two actresses in it. Anyway, the very first promotional image for the film has been released... ... and you wonder why the fuck they even bothered. That has got to be the single lamest promotional still ever. • Speaking of shitty promotional images, have you seen the first poster for the American remake of Takashi Miike's One Missed Call? Ugh. Lame. I guess that's appropriate, though. • I can't believe I'm hearing/reading/seeing/typing this, but Shim Hyung-Rae, the director of Dragon Wars said at a press conference the other day that there will be a sequel, probably in 2009. As if that wasn't shocking enough, did you know that Dragon Wars has pulled in 8.6 million dollars so far, making it the highest grossing Korean film in America of all time? Well, now you know. • Wong Kar Wai is pretty famous for editing his movies like crazy and I think it's probably safe to assume that he has an entire warehouse full of unused/cut footage somewhere. You just know he does. Anyway, apparently, he originally shot a different ending for his first film, As Tears Go By, starring Maggie Cheung and Andy Lau. The deleted scene was probably put on some Taiwanese DVD release or something, and you can now see it here. There's not a whole lot to it, but it's definitely not as depressing as the ending you see on the film now. • Tony Leung fans eager to see him in Ang Lee's award winning Lust, Caution might be happy to know that Coming Soon interviewed him recently. The interviewer doesn't seem to be the most informed person in the world, but it's still a worthwhile read. • Kaiju Shakedown's Grady Hendrix has posted another installment of his "The Other 13 Billion" series, which are interviews with people who work for Asian film distributors in the U.S. This time he is interviewing people from Viz Media, and it is, again, good good reading. • If you didn't catch Simon Pegg on Conan the other night, then you should be greatful for the existence of YouTube. Again, I have to do this quick. I apologize for the lack of any actual updates beyond headlines that I find in my inbox and on my friends list (goddamn, I love LJ's RSS feed reading), I just really have not had the time to spend writing. Movie reviews, personal updates, replying to comments, replying to emails and all that take more than I've got lately. I'd say more, but... well, you know. • Horror movie website Shock 'Till You Drop visited the set of the A Tale of Two Sisters remake. Might be of interest? Emily Browning, who is playing one of the sisters says "I guess, it's, we're trying to do it without dumbing it down too much, do you know what I mean?"Yeah, sure. Producer Walter Parkes had this to say: ""Part of our job in trying to translate movies like this to an American audience is to clarify the narrative substantially so that it's understandable to the Western audience, but not lose that certain edge of ambiguity that makes Asian cinema really fascinating." Yeah, sure. We all know what that means, I think. • I don't know if any of y'all bought the recently released DVDs of Horrors Of Malformed Men or Snake Woman's Curse (I haven't yet), but if you did then you might be interested to know that there are easter eggs on the DVDs. • Yesterday, I wrote about Variety's Asian film blog Kaiju Shakedown doing a series of interviews with U.S. distributors of Asian films on DVD. Today's entry is with Tartan's president Tony Borg, who I worked with a Comic Con and who is a very cool guy. • If you like samurai movies and enjoy reading about them, then YOU REALLY NEED TO GO HERE! NOW. • The Korean Film Council is an organization here in the US (they just opened offices in LA) dedicated to promoting Korean films out here. They have recently adopted a plan to market a small list of films out here in the US aggressively. I hope hope hope hope that they succeed. If you know any theater owners who might be willing to screen some of those films, send them the link! Ok, back to work. Tags: movie news, remakes

I have tons still to do, so I'm going to get this stuff out as quickly as possible. • Rob Cohen is not one of my favorite directors in the world. He was the man behind the camera for epic films like The Fast & The Furious, xXx and Stealth, but I am paying attention to him now because he is currently doing production on the third film in the The Mummy series (not counting The Scorpion King), currently titled The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. Rob has a blog that he's using to talk about the film and stuff and he's given readers a taste of what the 3rd film is going to be like, story-wise. It sounds pretty much like you'd expect it to sound. "Adgy," I hear you say, "why are you writing about this? Didn't you say that you didn't like the The Mummy movies?" Yes, I did say that. I'm impressed that you recall since I don't believe I've mentioned the films much since I saw The Mummy Returns back in 2001 (yes, this blog is that old). I mention this bit of news and am following the news on the production of this film because of the cast. Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong and Isabella Leong are all going to be in it. So, yeah, I'm interested. Not expecting a whole lot, necessarily, but still interested. • Variety's Asian film blog, Kaiju Shakedown is one of my favorite things to read. It's written by Grady Hendrix and it's smart and it's funny. Grady is currently doing something of a "series" for the blog about the distribution of Asian films on DVD in the United States. You can read the intro post as well as read part 1, which is an interview with Matt Kiernan, the DVD Label Manager for Caroline (who own Fantoma, who releases all of Yasuzo Masumura's films out here). The series will continue with interviews of other people working for other companies. So far, both of those entries have been extremely informative and interesting (for me, but this is very much my sort of thing), and I thought I'd go ahead and point them out here for anyone else that might be interested in that sort of thing. Did you know that Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target and Circuit City account for close to 60% of all US DVD sales? Or that Target and Wal-Mart alone consist of 43% of all US DVD sales? Well, you would if you'd read the posts. Do that. • Oh boy. The trailer for the remake of Takashi Miike's One Missed Call is out and about. *Yawn* I liked the original, although I think I'd have liked it a hell of a lot more if it'd been done 4 or 5 years earlier than it was, but... I have absolutely no interest in seeing this remake. None. The ONLY thing of interest about this movie (to me) is that it's directed by French director Eric Valette, who did a movie called Malefique that I haven't seen, but I've heard is amazing. That's not enough to get me to care about this remake, though. • And the last of these is for The Lady and all the rest of you Simon Pegg fans. A couple pictures of Simon and Run, Fatboy, Run co-star Thandie Newton at the film's after-party, as well as an online game for the movie. That's going to do it for the moment. So. • Artwork and release details for the upcoming release of Pirates Of The Carribean 3 are up at DVD Active. It's apparently getting both a single and double disc release as well as Blu-Ray. Special features are: "The only extra material on the single-disc will be an audio commentary, and a blooper reel. The two-disc edition should include that too (although the commentary track isn't listed for some reason), along with an Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom, a Keith & the Captain featurette on the cameo by Keith Richards, a Tale of the Multiple Jacks featurette, a Hoist the Colors featurette, a Masters of Design five part documentary (Jim Byrkit and The Map, Crash McCreary and the Krusty Pirates, Rick Heinrichs and the Singapore Set, Penny Rose and the Captain Teague Costumes, and Chris Peck and the Pirate Code Book), and an Inside the Brethren Court feature that takes a closer look at the legendary Pirate Lords. Completing the package will be The Pirate Code: Revealed feature, a World of Chow Yun Fat feature that looks at sensation Chow Yun Fat's rise to fame, and another featurette on the music of Hans Zimmer."See that bolded bit there? Guess that means I'm buying the 2 disc version... • On a somewhat similar note, DVD Active also has the art and specifications for the various Spider-Man 3 releases. The movie is getting a solo release, and there's going to be a trilogy boxset. Both in Blu-Ray and standard DVD. You can go to the link if you want more information on that. I refuse to post any of it here. • There are some pictures of Jessica Alba on the set of the remake of The Eye as well as a small interview by Entertainment Weekly posted here. I wouldn't even bother to mention this, but EW said it was a remake of a "Japanese" film, and I just wanted to point out that the movie is from Hong Kong, NOT JAPAN. Bit of a pet peeve. Notice Alba didn't bother to correct the reporter... • Also from ohnotheydidnt, are these pictures of Angelina Jolie shooting a scene from the upcoming film adaptation of the Mark Millar/J.G. Jones comic Wanted, also starring James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman and Terence Stamp. Really looking forward to that'n. That's all I got for now. Tags: dvd news, movie news, remakes

I haven't watched any movies recently because I've been re-watching all three seasons of Arrested Development. Finished it tonight. So fucking hilarious and genius and clever and best TV show ever. Start watching movies again tomorrow. Speaking of movies, this is what I bought on DVD at Comic Con: The Taste Of Tea (2 Disc Limited Edition), New Love In Tokyo (it was cheap?), Graveyard Of Honor (Miike's), Princess Aurora (bootleg that I got for free because I got the hook-ups), Contour (write more about this one later, hopefully), and Stop The Bitch Campaign (looks very Sachiko Hanai-ish and the cover has an Asian schoolgirl with a big sword on it). How am I supposed to not buy that? Anyway, you might look at that list and think I spent a lot of money, but I didn't. In fact, the entire Comic Con experience cost me a lot less than previous years. So there. I also came home to find some packages from Amazon waiting for me from The Lady. Whatta gal. One of them I knew about, the Hard-Boiled disc, because she told me not to buy it, but the other, Donald Richie's 100 Years Of Japanese Film book, was a surprise. Enough about me. • Another remake!! This time it's Universal Pictures remaking the recent Japanese period film Shinobi. It's to be written and directed by Max Makowski who... uh... has directed One Last Dance (an Asian action movie with Harvey Keitel that didn't get many good reviews) and some episodes of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Yeah. Oh, and he's taking it out of old-school Japan and putting it in modern day Hong Kong "Makowski will infuse the film with elements from Asian gangster and ninja genres." Yeah, great. I still haven't seen Shinobi. I've heard lots about it from people who loved it and people who hated it. Someday I will watch it. • Oh, and Joel Schumacher is going to remake Johnnie To's Breaking News. Haven't seen the original on that yet, either, but I bet you can guess what my reaction to the news was like. • Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien is doing a kung-fu movie with Shu Qi for his next project. Wait, what? Hou Hsiao-hsien is doing a kung fu movie?! I think the only movie of his I've seen was Three Times. It bored me to death and I've been kind of avoiding his work since then, although I do own a copy of Cafe Lumiere. He really doesn't strike me as a kung-fu type of guy. • DVD release details for both of the Grindhouse films have been released and neither of them will have the fake trailers on them. WTF?!?! Unless they're a easter egg, I guess??!? Weak. • Apple.com finally has the trailer for the new Ang Lee film Lust, Caution starring Tony Leung, Tang Wei, and Joan Chen. Looks fucking pimp. • In other (old) trailer news, the trailer for Ben Affleck's directorial debut Gone, Baby, Gone is out and about. I mention this here because I really liked the book, and even though Affleck directed it and put his brother in it as Patrick Kenzie and the trailer makes Angie Gennaro's character (played by Michelle Monaghan) look like a supporting role and it's the 4th book in the series not the first... I'm actually not dreading it. It does have Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris in it... I haven't read the book, written by Dennis Lehane (who also wrote Mystic River and is awesome) in ages, but I've started re-reading it again. I really hope the movie turns out alright. • Hot Fuzz came out on DVD today in the US. I hope you plan on buying it or renting very soon (if you haven't already). Now it is time for the sleeping. More remake news. I don't recall if I mentioned before that Martin Scorsese's next project was going to be another remake or not, but it is. He's remaking Masahiro Shinoda's Silence, which, in turn, was based on a novel by Shusaku Endo. IMDB entry for the remake is here. Anyway, Shinoda's film is finally getting DVD release via Britain's Masters Of Cinema, which is basically the UK equivalent to Criterion, and that is awesome. I haven't seen the movie, but I've been wanting to see more Shinoda ever since I saw Pale Flower, which is awesome. The story is, basically, about the persecution of Christian missionaries (I almost wrote "mercenaries" there...) in Japan in the 1500's. From all that I've read about it thus far, it sounds excellent, and given that he's the man behind Pale Flower, Double Suicide, and Samurai Spy it's not hard to believe. The question is whether I want to spend the money importing it or not. And this isn't the only remake news you're going to hear from me today... Roy Lee, the bane of the existence of Asian film purists (look at all the remakes he's produced or is producing!!!) is at it again. This time, he is producing a remake of the Korean film Failan. Ugh. Bad enough that the film is going to be remade. Even worse, though, is the way that the story is apparently going to be changed. According to that Variety article, the remake will be made into a revenge movie. Yep. Whereas the original is an incredibly sad love story, the remake is going to be about the husband getting revenge on the mobsters who killed his wife. I don't want to say too much about the plot of the original, because I actually want people to see it. It's an excellent movie, and if you enjoy incredibly depressing, but very very good movies, then you need to add this to your list. It stars Choi Min-sik, from Oldboy, and Cecilia Cheung, from The Promise. I wrote a short review of the movie almost two years ago that you can read here. Rotten Tomatoes only has 14 reviews of the film on the site, but every single one of them is positive. 100% rating. It's a seriously incredible film, and you should see it. Netflix
Amazon Anyway, according to the article, the remake will be directed by Vadim Perelman, who did House Of Sand And Fog and it will be written by Jose Rivera, who wrote The Motorcycle Diaries. So there is, actually, a fair chance that this remake will be a decent film. And, honestly, if they're going to remake it, I think I'd rather they did something different with it, anyway. I think. Maybe. In other remake news, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Elizabeth Banks ( Slither, The 40 Year Old Virgin) has been cast as the wicked stepmother in the remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters. =
?I like Elizabeth Banks. I hope she can pull it off. Tags: movie news, remakes, weaksauce
