BloodyDisgusting got the goods. Chanwook Park's Thirst will begin it's US theatrical run on July 31st in three theaters before expanding to more places. Those three theaters are: New York Landmark’s Sunshine Cinema (143 East Houston Street, near 2nd Avenue) Los Angeles Laemmle’s Sunset 5 (8000 Sunset Boulevard, at Crescent Heights) San Francisco Landmark’s Bridge Theatre (3010 Geary Boulevard, near Blake Street) Guess where The Lady and I are going to be on Friday, July 31st? Too fucking right. I don't know when and where it'll expand to. I do know that the Laemmle theater in Pasadena, CA is getting it on August 14th. The Official Website isn't much help. If it screens at the Laemmle in Claremont, I predict that I will end up seeing this movie at least 4 times. Assuming I'm still employed by the time it happens (which is not a given). Read some sad news yesterday that Japanese director Yasuharu Hasebe passed away at the age of 77 from pneumonia. Rater than take the time to actually try and add some original content to this blog for a change, I'm going to refer you elsewhere to read about the man. Cinebeats has a fantastic obituary up that would shame anything I might care to write, anyway. There isn't a whole hell of a lot of Hasebe's work available in the US, but my favorite film of his, Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter, is. Stars Meiko Kaji (of course) as the leader of a girl gang that gets in fights, listens to music and gets in fights. Amazon - HK Flix - Netflix - BlockbusterI think I've only seen about four of the man's movies, but I enjoyed all of them to some degree and I really wish someone would bring Black Tight Killers back into print so I could buy it. You can also check out his Wikipedia page for more information. I would absolutely love to give each of these their own post and maybe talk a little about each film at some length, but I don't have time. Luckily, the pages I will link you to include descriptions and details alongside the trailers. These all appeared while I was out on vacation. Please assume that the mere fact that I am mentioning them here means that they are worthwhile and go watch them. You don't need to know any details. My recommendation should be enough, yeah? Two new Ju-On movies. One trailer. Here. Pen Ek Ratanaruang ( Last Life In The Universe) has a new one called Nymph. Trailer is here. Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle, looks like FUN. That new Zhang Ziyi film Sophie's Revenge has a new trailer. Here. Kore-eda's Air Doll. Written about more than once here. Here is trailer. A Finnish film called Mothgirl looks fucking awesome. Go watch the trailer. Yoshihiro Nishimura's Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl is premiering at the New York Asian Film Festival and as a pre-taste, we've got the Wrist Cut Rally. Enjoy. It looks like the live action adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire is going to be hitting the US in limited release in July, according to it's distributor. This is the UK poster, I believe. According to Bloody Disgusting, the new Chanwook Park film Thirst will begin it's US theatrical run on July 31st with "the screenings starting in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York and gradually expanding to include other states for a wider release". If you still haven't seen the trailer for that yet, it's at that Bloody Disgusting link. Go watch it. This is all very good news, although I have my doubts about Blood. The Lady and I went to a movie while we were in New York and I'll write about that later, but I think I'm going to be spending some money this week on some others. I still need to see: Departures Drag Me To Hell The Brothers Bloom The Hangover Up Rudo Y Cursi I get the feeling I'm still forgetting something. Anyway, I'm fuckin' PUMPED that we get to see Thirst so soon. Tags: movie news Current Music: 川井憲次 - Message #8501 | Powered by Last.fm

I promise to do a vacation post, but I just spent some time trying to sort of catch up on what I've missed while I was away and now I have 50 million tabs open in Firefox and I want to post some of the stuff while the desire is alive and strong. So excuse the number of posts from me here, unless you actually enjoy reading this stuff. If that's the case, well... you're welcome. One thing that I did hear about while I was gone was the deaths of both David Carradine and Shih Kien. I'm going to assume you all know who David Carradine is. Shih Kien is probably best known for being the bad guy, Han, in Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon, but he made a whole ton of kung fu movies and a bunch of non-kung fu ones, too. I'm not really familiar enough with either of these actors to be able to say anything other than I was sad to hear that they'd died. Wanted to mention Shih Kien especially since I don't think his death was too terribly well publicized in the US. Kung Fu Cult Cinema posted some links to a bunch of pictures and a news coverage video on the passing of Kien if you're interested. Just read a little about a French/Israeli movie at Cinema Beacon that sounds like it's right up my alley. It's called Kirot and it stars the very busy lately Olga Kurylenko ( Quantum Of Solace, Hitman) as "A woman coerced into becoming a hit woman for a shadowy organization after being imprisoned for working as a prostitute. She escapes from her new employees and joins forces with an abused woman she encounters on the run. Together they embark on a campaign of revenge." According to Cinema Beacon, the director, Danny Lerner, was asked what the film was about and his response was ""It's about two girls and lots of guns".SOLD. I really liked Kurylenko in Quantum Of Solace and I really like the idea of her in a role like this, even if the plot sounds totally unoriginal. Here's to hoping for some well done action and violence perpetrated by attractive women. Usually a good formula for a positive review from me. On a somewhat related note, Olga is also starring in the new Neil Marshall ( The Descent, Doomsday) film, Centurion, alongside Dominic West. That film, about Romans and wars and shit, looks fucking awesome so far. Marshall described Kurylenko's character thusly: "Her family were butchered by the Romans, she had her tongue cut out by the Romans, she's had a hell of a time and she's out for Roman blood." I guess a demo reel was shown to some people at Cannes and the buzz has been pretty good so far. It's tentatively scheduled for release later this year. Even though I doubt Ms. Kurylenko gets to shoot anybody in that one, I am REALLY looking forward to it. And I gotta say if she wants to just play characters who are A) angry B) vengeful C) violent or D) all of the above for the rest of her career, I am perfectly ok with that. Just the other day I posted about the new Whispering Corridors movie coming out in Korea next month. And right afterwards, of course, Kung Fu Cult Cinema posts a link to the film's official website and the first trailer. There are new pics and a plot synopsis now, too. A group of schoolgirls swear a blood pact of friendship so strong, that they even agree they will all die together. When one of the troop of teens tops herself by skydiving off a roof, the remaining gals see the error of their ways and decide death isn’t all that enticing after all. The ghost of their dead friend - on the other hand - is hell bent on ensuring they honour their promise.Synopsis copied and pasted from 24framespersecond. Visit the Official Website for the trailer and more pictures. There isn't much to the trailer, but this looks pretty badass so far... Kung Fu Cult Cinema's Hitman-Reloaded posted two new posters for the upcoming 5th film in the Korean Whispering Corridors series. This reminded me that I wanted to post some of the earlier images released for the film because they were pretty fucking badass. I don't know much else about the movie, but if you keep up with Hitman's thread at the KFCC forum, you'll be as up to date as is humanly possibly. The Whispering Corridors series is, basically, a number of completely unrelated Korean films that all involve Korean school girls and the supernatural. The four films released to this point have all been enjoyable to varying degress, depending on what you're expecting to get from them. The first three, Whispering Corridors, Memento Mori and Wishing Stairs were released by Tartan as The Ghost School Trilogy in a 4 disc boxset back in late 2007. The fourth film, Voice , was released in the middle of last year by Genius Entertainment, and with a completely inappropriate DVD cover. I say inappropriate because the film is most definitely not gorey or violent in the way that this image might lead you to believe (let alone the RIDICULOUS tag line). It's more of a moody, atmospheric type of scary film, as evidenced by the original, totally badass Korean posters. I'll save further ranting on the subject because I've already said all of it. I will mention, though, that the star of Voice, Kim Ok-bin, is also the leading lady in the new Chan-wook Park vampire film Thirst and is not a bad place to go if you want to get a look at her before then. Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to the new film in the series and I hope they decide to release a whole buttload more posters. Those guys really do it well. Go see Hitman's thread if you want to see more. I think you have to register, though. One of the best thing about the Cannes Film Festival is the slew of images and news that comes out about upcoming films being sold to distribution companies there. Today, Sina.com posted some photos from the upcoming Confucius film by Hu Mei, starring Chow Yun Fat that came out of Cannes. I think it's safe to say that everyone is hoping this film will be a "return to respectability" of sorts for Mr. Chow, although if you think about (or look at his IMDB page), you'll notice that only really bad movie he's done since 2003 is Dragonball: Evolution. By the way, I went and saw Dragonball: Evolution and I can tell you that it wasn't any worse than Bulletproof Monk. But still. CYF's also got Shanghai coming out this year, which co-stars John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Franka Potente, David Morse and Rinko Kikuchi (who is going to be in about 5 million movies this year herself). With that cast list, it's hard not to be optimistic, but I have this bad feeling about it turning out to be something like Memoirs Of A Geisha, where the cast is pretty much the only thing going for it. I'm still wet-dreaming about the collaboration with Johnnie To that was being talked about last year. That's what we really need here. Really really really. Thanks to Kung Fu Cult Cinema for the heads up on Confucius. Tags: chow yun fat, movie news Current Music: Lustmord - Ash | Powered by Last.fm

The Asian cinema corner of the blogosphere has been on fire the last couple of days after Screen Daily broke the news that the project director Shinya Tsukamoto has just finished shooting is, in fact, a third Tetsuo movie. Tetsuo: The Iron Man, for those of you unfamiliar, was Tsukamoto's breakthrough cyberpunk film from 1989 about, very basically, two men being turned into machines and fighting. Very very basically. It also involves a metal drill penis, which is always good fun. It's a totally insane film and it kicks incredibly large amounts of ass. Anyway, Tetsuo 3, tentatively titled Tetsuo Project is actually going to be in english. Nippon Cinema has some stills. Any new Tsukamoto project is worth celebrating, but this one gets a little extra from me. Tags: movie news Current Music: Coil - The Sea Priestess | Powered by Last.fm

Thanks to Twitch for the heads up on this. The artists responsible for the soundtrack to the recently released in the US French horror film Martyrs, Alex and Willie Cortez (who record under the name Seppuku Paradigm), have made their original score for the film available for free download from their website. Get it here. I watched this movie for the first time last week and, to be completely honest, I don't remember a damn bit about the music in it. I don't even remember there being any music in it. I'm pretty sure that that's due more to the fact that my jaw was on the floor and I was struck dumb for almost the entire running time of the film than any problem with the music, though. In fact, all of the "oh fuck, oh shit, holy crap" moments pretty much ruined my ability to review the movie after a single viewing. I remember exactly jack shit about the cinematography, for example. I didn't even notice it. I'll give you the synopsis from the back of the DVD: Lucie, a 10 year old girl, is found wandering in the streets, bruised and bloodied. Unable to say who did this to her, or why, she is placed in a hospital where she meets Anna, another young girl who had been abused. Fifteen years later, with Anna s help, Lucie sets out to get revenge on her attackers. When she believes she has found the couple who abused her, she confronts them ...and that is when the terror truly begins. So I pre-ordered the DVD of this because some friends of mine that saw it at a film festival had been raving about it, general word of mouth seemed very positive and because I do loves me a brutal revenge flick. But this movie... damn, I don't want to spoil it for any horror fans who haven't seen it yet, so all I'm going to say is that it is NOT a revenge movie. Not in the way you might think. It is so so so so much more than that. Less than halfway through the movie, the plot takes a sharp turn and goes into completely uncharted territory. In keeping with the tradition of recent French horror films like Inside and Frontier(s), it's also incredibly gorey, violent and disturbing. Not at all for the faint of heart or weak stomached. If that sounds at all like your cup of tea, then get this goddamn movie in your DVD player as soon as possible. Get it at Amazon. In other horror news, the totally awesome Spanish language film [REC] is finally getting a R1 DVD release, although not on Blu-Ray for some reason.
