This week, warren_ellis has been posting some of his favorite webcomics. I haven't been able to give all of them a proper look yet, but from what I have looked at, one has really stood out. It's called Aimeski, Evil Girl Genius. It's about a lady who is mean to people and it's very, very funny and sometimes very, very foul (and very, very, VERY funny. It reminds me of The Lady sometimes. You can go check it out at the website or, if you prefer, I've added created an LJ for it's RSS feed at aimeski. It rules. Another one that I've enjoyed is Plan B, which unfortunately does not seem to have an RSS feed, but does have a Facebook group. I'm still not on Facebook (AWAY, EVIL SPIRITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), so it does me no good, but it might do some for you. It's about a super-villain lady and it's entertaining, weird and funny. Just like all good webcomics, yeah? Tags: comics Current Music: DACM - untitled 3 | Powered by Last.fm

I just read on BoingBoing that there's a new Perry Bible Fellowship collection out! The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack was apparently released by Dark Horse one month ago. Why the hell didn't anyone tell me?? For those of you not familiar, Perry Bible Fellowship is a webcomic that also sees print in some places. It's consistently hilarious. Consistently. I like it so much that I pre-ordered the previous collection, The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories . Here's some good examples of the insane amount of win created by the people behind this. Now you can, of course, simply visit the website to read all of the comics on the web, but the new book apparently contains extra materials and if you, like me, purchased the previous version, you may be interested to know that this new volume includes everything in that previous one, plus many other strips that, according to BoingBoing, "were too racy, gross, unfunny or weird for the newspaper syndicate." So, yeah, I'll be ordering this as soon as I finish typing here. The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack on Amazon. Highest possible recommendation. Tags: awesometown, comics, listen to me now

I swear to god, one day I will be caught up. • Some time ago, it was widely reported that the Weinstein Company had acquired the rights to the Thai action flick Chocolate (read my review), but apparently that was either not the case or they have relinquished those rights and now Magnolia has the rights. This is seriously fantastic news. Especially the part that says the film will be released theatrically in 2009.• A fantastic interview with writer Greg Rucka can and should be read here. LOTS of Queen & Country talk. • This is the poster for The Uninvited, aka the American remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters: I don't know why I bother to mention that. Does anyone care at this point? • Akira is coming out on Blu-Ray in February! • An interview with Chuck Palahniuk about the film version of Choke can be read over here. The Lady and I saw the film a couple of days ago and we both enjoyed it quite a bit. It made me want to re-read the book again, so I think I'll do that as soon as I'm done with Kafka On The Shore. That's what I got right now. I would say that I'll be updating again soon, but you and I both know that the chances of that being true are currently slim. Tags: comics, dvd news, movie news, remakes

I've just watched the incredibly violent red band trailer for the upcoming Punisher: War Zone movie. And I may have to re-think my preconceived notions about this movie. I might actually enjoy it. I still think it looks kind of lame, but... wow, he stuck that chairleg in the dude's eye! Speaking of Punisher, I had plans to do a big, long post lamenting the fact that Garth Ennis' run on The Punisher has come to an end, but I just haven't had the time or the patience. Maybe later. But for now, I'll just say that not only is that book the best Punisher book ever BY MILES, but it might even be my favorite of all time, by anyone, ever. Tags: comics, movie news

Yes, friends I am back from San Diego Comic Con and, for the most part, alive and well. Still tired as fuck. I just spent the last couple of hours doing my best to skim through my friends list, but skip=950 only got me back to Monday (NOTE: I started this entry two days ago, on July 30th), even with a filter on, so if I missed anything of note, please do not hesitate to inform me in a comment or email. Now. Rather than attempt some kind of glorious and amazing actual write-up of SDCC '08, I will instead give you random thoughts related to it. This will save time. I may or may not even come back to this entry and add things as I remember them in the next couple of days or so. That might be kind of lame, but probably not as lame as doing a whole 'nother entry to mention one small thing I remembered late. These are in no particular order. • First off, my traveling companions were Nick ( captainioga) and Kyle ( erschlagener). I'm going to refer to them by their actual names in order to save on keystrokes. • This year was the 10th year for Ric Meyer's Kung Fu Extravaganza, which is a Thursday night deal where Ric Meyers gets up and shows clips from kung fu films from the past year and usually has a guest or two. For the 10th Anniversary, Meyers was able to get permission from many different distribution companies to show clips and so did what was advertised as the "best kung fu scenes ever". This was nice because the last couple of years, he's been somewhat beholden to Tai Seng Films. They paid for him to be out there and he was pretty much stuck showcasing their releases. And it sucked. Also, I know that last year Dragon Dynasty actually turned him down when he asked to show clips from some of their movies. Not so this year. I don't think the clips he showed were actually what he would choose to be the best kung fu fight scenes of all time, necessarily. He started the bit off by saying he wasn't going to show any Bruce Lee because everyone knew and loved Bruce Lee and had seen all of his movies, so why bother? He showed some old Master Lau stuff, an Angela Mao clip from a movie whose name I can't recall, but hasn't been released on DVD (like WAY TOO MANY OF HER MOVIES), and a scene from Magnificent Butcher by Yuen Woo Ping. This was all awesome and I'd only ever seen Magnificent Butcher. It's made me want to start getting my hands on all these Shaw Brothers films that have been getting DVD releases the last couple of years. Then he moved onto the newer material. I'm very pleased that he showed both the big fight sequence in the mall at the end of Police Story AND the big fight scene at the end of Drunken Master 2 for the Jackie Chan bits. And for Jet Li he showed the fight at the end of Fist Of Legend. Unfortunately, the clips for both Drunken Master 2 and Fist Of Legend were from the horrible, Miramax/Weinstein dubbed DVDs, but since there is very little dialogue, it was bearable. He also showed a scene from Yuen Woo Ping's TV series Tai-Chi Master (not to be confused with the film starring Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, also directed by Woo Ping), starring Jackie Wu and the big fight scene at the end of Flash Point, starring Donnie Yen and Colin Chou. All very good choices (though I was expecting something from SPL/ Kill Zone and some mention of Tony Jaa). Before starting with the "best fight scenes of all time", he had a few guests, including the director and star of Kiltro, a kung fu film from Chile, currently out on DVD from Magnolia. Looked like it might be pretty good, if low budget. During his discussion with them, he also mentioned that their newest film, Mirage Man was probably going to be getting some theatrical dates in the US, which is great news. I'm doing this backwards, but before talking to the Kiltro guys and showing clips, he brought up some of the people behind "the best American kung fu movie ever made" -- Kung Fu Panda. At first, I was like "whut?", but after thinking about it... you know, he's probably right. And after his talk with some of the people behind it (the people involved with the kung fu aspects), I decided I liked the film even more than after I saw it. He also spent a lot of time talking shit about The Forbidden Kingdom, which was funny, right and sorely needed. The epic fail of that movie... man, don't get me started. Meyers ended the Extravaganza by saying that this may be the last one he does, as there aren't many kung fu films being made anymore. Conditions in Hong Kong are not what they once were and making good movies (not just kung fu ones) is very difficult. So we'll see. • Half off trade paperback tables are EVIL. The majority of the money I spent went there. Picked up all but one of the Lucifer trades (and can now sell off the individual issues), all of Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman trades (his run actually made me a fan of the character, whereas I didn't care about her at all before), and plenty of other assorted hunks of colored paper. • Kyle and I shared an elevator with Benicio Del Toro in the hotel at one point. Dude is tall. • This is the first time in four years of going to SDCC where the hotel Nick and I stayed at was within walking distance of the Con. Having your hotel nearby is, I have to say, simply the most amazing thing on earth. WELL worth the extra money. Not having to drive, find parking and carry everything you buy around with you is HEAVEN. Add to that the fact that you can sleep in later, go back to the hotel and take a nap anytime you want or use it as a meeting place makes it not only HEAVEN, but God's Own Favorite Thing He Created. • I took very few pictures, but the ones I did take, I will post in a separate entry later on. Both Nick and Kyle took a bajillion pictures of cosplayers, so I'll just link to their shit when I notice that they're up. Someone else has a really large gallery here. • Before leaving for SDCC on Wednesday, Nick, Kyle and I went out to Los Angeles for this: Which was totally fucking groovy. Bought a copy of the Region 1 Spaced box set for The Lady and had it signed by the three of them. Got my picture taken with Simon Pegg and then with Kevin Smith (to be posted later). Edgar Wright complimented me on my Heroic Trio t-shirt and I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to see Hard-Boiled on the big screen last year. • There were/are too many fucking people at Comic Con. Not only was the movie/tv area of the exhibit hall a constant jam of other people's bodies being too close to yours, but there were a good number of panels that we were not able to get into because arriving half an hour beforehand wasn't early enough. It was seriously insane. Even moreso than in previous years. • I didn't go to the Battlestar Galactica panel because it was scheduled for the exact same time as the Grant Morrison & Gerard Way panel. I didn't realize who Gerard Way was until he came onstage. It's probably a good thing I went to that instead, regardless, because I wanted to go the panel before Grant and Gerard that was in the same room and if I'd have left to try and get to the BSG panel, I bet it would have been full before I could have gotten to it. Anyway, Grant Morrison is a personal hero of mine and him talking somewhere will trump just about anything else happening at Comic Con at any time. As for Gerard Way... I have to admit that he was actually pretty awesome. I don't care for his band (My Chemical Romance) much at all, from the one or two songs I've heard, but he was a funny, intelligent guy talking with Grant. Supposedly, his comic book, The Umbrella Academy is very good. It even won an Eisner. The discussion itself was very enjoyable, and there was one moment when Grant was talking about how "you are the only you that has ever existed" that was one of those life affirming, goddamn I love this man, he's so fucking awesome moments. Reminded me of the panel he did with Deepak Chopra last year (it was last year, right?) which was like that except I got that feeling frequently, rather than just once. Grant and Chopra did a panel again this year, but I had to miss it because Kyle and I were on our way out of San Diego. I'm sure it'll show up on YouTube if it hasn't already. EDIT: Boo-yah. • In addition to being incredibly cool, awesome and smart, Grant Morrison is the snappiest dresser I've ever physically laid eyes on and he's also very good looking. In that "I almost wish i was gay or bisexual because I feel like I'm missing out on the lust portion of my infatuation" kinda way. Did I ever post the picture of me and Grant that I got last year? Maybe I'll post it when I get around to the picture posting. • Apparently, Michelle Yeoh showed up to promote The Mummy 3! I had originally planned to go to the thing they were doing for the movie, but decided against it when I saw that they were actually doing it in the damn exhibit hall, where the ocean of people were, rather than in a room. Plus, I really didn't think they'd get anyone cool to show up. Shit. • I missed all the Watchmen movie stuff, too. Actually, you know what, let's just say I missed everything movie related this year. If I think of something movie-related that I did make it to, I'll let you know. • I hear Disney and Pixar are going to be working on an animated sequel to Tron!?!? You should have seen the look on my dad's face. I bet that's what my face looks like when I experience something that feels like Total Win. Apparently, they showed some light cycle race stuff. My dad, a big time Tron fan, is very excited. • Found out that Ogre from Skinny Puppy is in Repo: The Genetic Opera. This could possibly be cool news except that Paris Hilton is in it, too, and so I'm not sure what to think. I hope he doesn't have any scenes with her... • No Drunken Master booth selling Asian DVDs to me at a discount this year. Not entirely sure why. There were a couple other Asian DVD sellers there, though, and I did manage to snag a few, including a Chocolate bootleg with english subs that the seller assured me were "great" (and I trust this particular seller not to lie to me), Memories Of Matsuko (FINALLY!), Bohachi Bushido: Code Of The Forgotten Eight (pink film, Kyle and I watched it one night on my laptop and it was pretty goodamn awesome) and Survive Style 5+, which I've been meaning to get a copy of for quite some time now. Think that's alls what I got right now. Tags: comic con, comics, movie news

You may or may not recall a previous post of mine in which I mentioned that there were plans to release a DVD of short, animated Batman stories before the release of The Dark Knight later this year. Or maybe you read it somewhere else. Well, Warner Bros has finally let fly some actual details about this and Anime News Network has them. Read the article for detailed info. If you're into anime, you're probably familiar with some of the names of the directors, but I am largely unfamiliar and unexposed to anime, so the names don't mean a whole lot to me. Two things in the article stand out, anyway: 1) I don't see Satoshi Kon's name on that list. The director of Paprika and Perfect Blue was, originally, on the list of people that were supposedly contributing to this, but apparently that is no longer/never was the case. Weak. 2) Comic writers Greg Rucka and Brian Azzarello are listed among the scriptwriters. Fuck yes. The rest of this is copied and pasted from the article. The project will be released throughout North America on standard DVD and high-definition Blu-ray Disc on July 8. On the same date, it will be made available via video-on-demand, pay-per-view, and digital downloads. It will also be supported by a major natonwide publicity campaign, to include extensive print advertising and coverage as well as promotional television spots. Gotham Knight will be released as a standard US$24.98 DVD and a two-disc special edition, with extras including a selection of episodes from the mid-1990s Batman: The Animated Series and a documentary on Bob Kane, the creator of Batman. The special edition will be priced at US$29.98, while the Blu-ray release, which will also include the special edition's extras, is set to retail at US$34.98. Da fug. I unplug for two days and look at all this shit that happens. • Heath Ledger dies. Fuck! The guy was seemingly right about to hit his stride as an actor and become well known as being great at what he did. Horrible. The fact that he was in the midst of shooting the new Terry Gilliam film (co-starring alongside TOM FUCKING WAITS) makes me feel even worse. • One of the movies in 2008 I'm most looking forward to, American Crime with Ellen Page and Catherine Keener, is probably going to have it's release date pushed back to May.• I read that over 5 million people have died in the Congo over the last decade. • Marvel is canceling The Order, a comic book I was very much enjoying. • The line-up for the 2008 Coachella Music Festival announced and not even Portishead coming back will get me to want to go to it. • And, you know, the Oscar Nominees were announced, but I actually want to spend some time writing about that. WTF, man?! All over a Monday and a Tuesday? I'm going to Chipotle for lunch. That will make me feel better. Tags: comics, current events, movie news, music news

I worked today, so I had to pick up my comic books late. I got to the shop about 20 minutes before closing. They DID have a copy of the new League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen book. They DID NOT have a copy of the new Scott Pilgrim. Weak. Of the 7 actual comics that came from my pull list today, I have read 4 of them so far. This is what I think: Punisher MAX #52: OMFG! Punisher War Journal #13: This is the first issue of this series I've liked. It's actually FUNNY. The New Avengers #36: Ugh. Brian Bendis, why can't I quit you? Nova #8: I'm really digging this book, as well as most of the "cosmic" stuff Marvel is doing nowadays. Speaking of the cosmic stuff, is anyone reading the Annihilation books? Here are some things you may or may not be interested in hearing: • I'm even more famouser! A review of the Acid Mothers Temple show I was at a few weeks ago, with pictures. I am in some of these pictures. See, look, there I am on the left watching Kawabata Makoto play his guitar with his feet. You shoulda been there. • Speaking of concerts, I saw Porcupine Tree on Sunday in Anaheim. They were excellent, as usual. It's my third time seeing them, all with my dad, and they've been fantastic each time. Their new album is very good. I'm seeing Melt-Banana on Friday night. I was originally going to see them on Saturday, but I can't make that show, so I'm seeing them Friday. Anyone want my ticket(s) to see them on Saturday? Say so. • I also bought tickets to see Skinny Puppy twice next month. I thought about going to all three shows, but Ticketmaster's service charges were so fucking insane that I decided not to. Seriously, they nearly doubled the price of the ticket with their fucking fees. Pricks. • DVD Active has the cover art and specs for the upcoming special edition release of Joss Whedon's Serenity, as well as the cover art and specs for the R1 DVDs of 300. 300 is coming in both single and double disc versions. • Twitch has the poster and some pics from the new Pen-ek Ratanaruang ( Last Life In The Universe, Invisible Waves) film, Ploy that look pretty awesome. I wonder if Chris Doyle is shooting this, as well? • My man hwee posted some more stills from the new Wong Kar Wai film, My Blueberry Nights here in wongkarwai. My anticipation continues to grow. • This is more for me, to check when I get home, but jacen has a commentary track for Wormwood #3 in his blog that I need to read when I have the issue in my hands. If you haven't been reading Wormwood, you're missing out on the best creator owned book Ennis has done since Preacher and Hitman ended. And... uh... that's it? For now? There's a lot of stuff I intend to post today, but there is one thing that takes precedence. The return of Tommy Monaghan. FINALLY!!! FINALLY!!!! FINALLY!!!!! I cannot fucking begin to describe how excited I am about this. Hitman is my favorite comic book ever, and Tommy is the only character that even comes close to Punisher when it comes to my favorite character ever. I'll put Hitman up against Preacher as Garth Ennis' best work ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. I can totally understand why people generally prefer Preacher, and I can even understand why some people don't care too much for Hitman. Honestly. For me, though, nothing is better. Ennis announced that he and artist John McCrea were going to do a little run in JLA: Classified with Tommy YEARS AGO, and I eagerly waited for it for a long time. Eventually, I gave up, figuring DC shelved the idea. They cancelled the book after 60 issues, and I guess the trade collections weren't doing well enough for them to finish collecting the entire series, so I wasn't really all that surprised. Just disappointed. And then I see this. Been far, far too long since Tommy Monaghan's been seen around the DC Universe.
That's due to change later this year. DC's holding details close to the vest right now, but as was announced this weekend in Bristol, yes, Garth Ennis and John McCrea will re-team for a Hitman story. While Ennis himself has said that he and McCrea were working on a "lost" story where Monaghan meets the JLA for an arc of JLA: Classified, plans change. DC has confirmed that Ennis and McCrea's project will indeed be a three issue miniseries, Hitman/JLA, and will debut sometime after August.
Reportedly, if the miniseries does well, it may be enough to get DC to bring the Hitman trades back into print, and possibly complete the collection.Christ Almighty, that would just about complete my life. No longer having to fish the remaining issues out of my back issue bins in the garage? Seeing the whole series complete on my bookshelf? That would do it for me. For those of you that missed this series, let me give you a quick heads up. Tommy Monaghan is an Irish-born orphan living in The Cauldron (DC's equivalent of Hell's Kitchen), which is a neighborhood in Gotham City so bad that even Batman rarely visits. He's also a hitman, who specializes in offing superpowered jackasses. He can do this because he once survived an attacked by an alien that left him with superpowers of his own. Telepathy and X-Ray vision. Tommy, despite being an assassin, has a conscience and will only take contracts on "bad guys". The series was part of the DC Universe, and had the occasional superhero guest appearance. Batman, Catwoman, Green Lantern, Superman, The Demon, and others. If Preacher was Garth's homage to westerns, then Hitman is his homage to Hong Kong action cinema. The character of Tommy is HUGELY influenced by John Woo's The Killer, and, in fact, a supporting character in the series, Ringo, was modeled directly after the characters Chow Yun Fat played in his "heroic bloodshed" films. Ennis went so far as to name the character Ringo after HK director Ringo Lam (who directed Chow Yun Fat in City On Fire, which is the film Quentin Tarantino remade as Reservoir Dogs), and dedicated the storyline, "For Tomorrow" (an obvious nod to the A Better Tomorrow films) that focused on the character to John Woo and Chow Yun Fat. Not only that, but early on in the series you could see posters for various HK films on the walls of the apartment of Tommy's friend Pat. I don't remember all of them offhand, but I know one of them was for In The Line Of Duty IV, which is an awesome film directed by Yuen Woo Ping and starring Donnie Yen. Believe it or not, though, that's not even the reason Hitman is my favorite comic of all time. It helps, of course, but it's not the main reason. The main reason Hitman is my favorite is because it was FUCKING GOOD. Every time I read it, I am amazed at how well Ennis can go from absurd and hilarious to dead serious in the span of a single fucking issue. You'd have stories like "Zombie Night At The Gotham Aquarium" where Tommy and his pals are fighting zombiefied penguins, seals, and other assorted marine life and then the next storyline is almost completely serious, black, and fucked up. It never felt forced, it never felt awkward, and it was ALWAYS entertaining. I'd also even go so far as to say that the female characters in Hitman are better and maybe even more realistic than they are in Preacher. I'm not going to delve too deeply into why on that point because I'm a guy and I don't necessarily feel qualified enough to discuss what women are "really" like. I'll just say that they felt more real to me. No disrespect to Tulip or Amy, of course, I just think Teagel and Wendy were more believable. And I'm not going to say that it has anything to do with the fact that they're (almost) always pissed and yelling. It's too easy, there are too many women on my friends list, and The Lady knows where my nuts are. So I'm keeping those thoughts to myself. Anyway. He's finally coming back. And I have a request to those of you fine, upstanding citizens who read this blog and are of the comic buying persuasion. BUY THIS COMIC WHEN IT COMES OUT!!!!!Do it for me. Do it for you. I need this series completed in trade paperback. Not want. NEED. Thanks to watchmelaugh and beatzo, who posted about this. I almost never visit comic news sites anymore, so I would have missed it otherwise. Tags: comics, geeking, listen to me now

It's a little known fact about me that I only type with two fingers. I never took a typing class in high school, and have never bothered to be taught the "right" way to do it. I do pretty well with just the two fingers. I can move pretty fast, but probably not fast enough to ever be a secretary for some big corporate executive. Ah well. I mention this because I have a nice gash on the index finger of my left hand today. I cut myself WITH THE THUMBNAIL ON MY RIGHT HAND last night while unbuttoning my pants to use the restroom. Can you believe that shit? Ridiculous. So now I am forced to either try typing with my middle finger on that hand, or typing slowly with my finger on that hand. The choice is difficult. Pain or immense frustration? I am telling you this only because I want you to know what I go through and how much I suffer to bring you these wonderful, life-affirming blog entries. Things: • This morning, I purchased tickets for my dad and I to go see Porcupine Tree in May. It will be our third time seeing them. I've seen a couple leaks of their new album already, but haven't bothered to download them. I'll wait for the CD. So many concerts happening in the next few months. • When I listen to Venetian Snares on my computer at work, a lot of people look at me funny as they walk by the door. No one has yet mustered the nuts to ask me about it. • The remake of the Thai horror film Shutter is well on it's way. That fucking blows. • Speaking of remakes, David Cronenberg's Scanners is on it's way there, also. It'll be directed by whats-his-face that did Saw II and III, and written by David Goyer. • Miho Hatori wrote a little in her blog about the West Coast tour she just recently finished. The things she had to say about Visalia, a city in northern California, were... interesting. Many people asked me in LA, where are going next ? I asked "Visalia". Everybody asked me "What's that ?"
Well...we need to pass many cow's farms, the bad smell of the gas of Cows, which is methane. SOunds so already Sci-fi to me....Haha. For the record, Visalia is a shitstain of a town. I've been there a couple of times, as my employer has a warehouse there. It blows. • My good lil buddy beautyofbeing has asked me to pimp the LJ film discussion community aberrantfilms for her, and so I am doing that. Knowing that my friends list and I are a bevy of knowledge, taste, and information in the language of cinema, it was a good choice on her part. I see that about 7 people on my friends list are already members of the community, but if any of the rest of you are interested in good film discussion, I recommend joining and participating in that there community. It doesn't, at this moment, get a whole lot of traffic, which is unfortunate, and probably the main reason she is reaching out to her better (me) for assistance. So join and discuss, fools. • I've had enough time to read and re-read Civil War #7, and I have decided that I do not much care for the last few pages of it at all. No sir, I do not. Think that'll do for now. Tags: comics, movie news, personal

I'm not going to link you to it. I refuse to contribute to the spiritual and intellectual demise of mankind. But the trailer for Fantastic Four 2 is on YouTube. It's not "official", as it was recorded by someone in a theater, but if you're a masochist, you can go and watch it. I just did. Because I am one. You can't really make out the Silver Surfer that well, but from what I can see, he looks good. But... you know... as soon as he opens his mouth, I'm sure that will be forgotten. I read a little interview thingie with Avi Arad, and he said something about the Surfer being "encased in metal", so that ought to tell you all you need to know. Just FYI. These are things I am thinking about: •It's odd sometimes how you never realize how much you miss some people until you see them for the first time in a while. •The new Skinny Puppy album has leaked. Normally, I wouldn't go anywhere near it. I want to wait until I have the actual album in my actual hands. But... I WANT TO LISTEN TO IT SO FUCKING BADLY!!!!!! Agh. I'll wait. I will. Less than a month now. I can do it. Speaking of leaked albums, I've seen links to download the new ones by Air, Explosions In The Sky, Do Make Say Think, and Nick Cave's Grinderman already, too. Yeesh. •Ah. Curse Of The Golden Flower is tomorrow. I have been waiting for this for... I don't know how long, but it's been a long fuckin' time. It's only got a 55% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't terribly encouraging, but that doesn't mean anything necessarily. I mean, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance only has a 56% rating, which is a bit mind-boggling, if you ask me. But we'll see. Even if it is "empty", I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy the fuck out of it anyway. •I'm currently about... a little over halfway through my third time reading A Gentleman's Game by Greg Rucka. The first Queen & Country novel. I recently purchased the second one, Private Wars in paperback, and I wanted to re-read this one again before I re-read the second one. Seriously, you guys... this is my favorite book EVER. The second one's pretty fucking awesome, too. •Did you read the new issue of Punisher this week? CHRIST!!!!! The last page is... it made me smile big. BIG. That's all I gots. Tags: books, comics, music

Apparently, the upcoming sequel to The Punisher, a movie I really did not care for, has a new writer. His name is Stuart Beattie, and his writing credits include all three Pirates Of The Carribean movies, Collateral, and the upcoming film adaptation of the comic 30 Days Of Night. Star Thomas Jane, who I did actually like in the first film, says he'd like to make a drama, without any goofy stuff. "Just straight noir, drama, with the inherent blood and guts in it." Jane also says it will definitely take place in New York. This... is encouraging. If Beattie is writing the film version of 30 Days Of Night, then it's safe to assume, I think, that he's read the comic. And if he's read that comic, maybe he's read some of Ennis' Punisher? Maybe something good will have come out of the first one after all. Now that they don't have to come up with an origin or a reason why he wears a skull on his chest, they can just focus on drama and violence. Doesn't matter if the first one sucked (AND IT DID). It got all that stuff out of the way. The character is established. They can do it right now. And while I'm on the subject, I noticed a new special edition DVD of the first film came out recently, and it's being sold now alongside the old version. I never bought the first release because I didn't like the movie. I ALMOST bought it on a number of occasions, though, just because there's an interview with Garth Ennis in the special features. But... ehhh... you know, I never really felt like it. So then when I see this new, extended special edition DVD on the shelf, I immediately think "ah fuck it, I'll just get it," and I pick it up. And I look at the special features. And I do not see Garth Ennis' name anywhere. IN FACT, I don't recall seeing ANY of the special features from the first edition listed on the back of this new edition. Now... can someone explain to me why the FUCK you would re-release a film and not include those special features? Does this happen all the time, and I just didn't know? Do these asshole movie distributors not only want you to double dip, but also want you to have to keep the second copy? That shit ain't right. I'll wait until Video Paradiso is doing a $2 off sale again and buy the first edition used. It'll probably cost me about $4 then. Tags: comics, dvd news, weaksauce
