I just read on BoingBoing that there's a new Perry Bible Fellowship collection out! The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack was apparently released by Dark Horse one month ago. Why the hell didn't anyone tell me?? For those of you not familiar, Perry Bible Fellowship is a webcomic that also sees print in some places. It's consistently hilarious. Consistently. I like it so much that I pre-ordered the previous collection, The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories . Here's some good examples of the insane amount of win created by the people behind this. Now you can, of course, simply visit the website to read all of the comics on the web, but the new book apparently contains extra materials and if you, like me, purchased the previous version, you may be interested to know that this new volume includes everything in that previous one, plus many other strips that, according to BoingBoing, "were too racy, gross, unfunny or weird for the newspaper syndicate." So, yeah, I'll be ordering this as soon as I finish typing here. The Perry Bible Fellowship Almanack on Amazon. Highest possible recommendation. Tags: awesometown, comics, listen to me now

This from Joe LoTruglio.com: Well, we’ve been crying wolf for about two years now. Let’s hope the sheep don’t slaughtered this time, because I think this is finally it. MTV Home Entertainment plans to release the long-awaited State DVD set on July 14th….Bastille Day! Because as you know, The State would not exist if not for its deeply influenced origins in French history.
Now…there’s a slight chance this exact date may change, but it will be released in the summer. MTV is hoping to set up a State DVD Website in the next couple months with more info, and possible pre-order sales. Their ultimate plan is to coordinate the release between the Reno finale and the premiere of Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter’s very funny new show, Michael and Michael Have Issues.
Tell your friends. Storm the castle. OH SHIT. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The State is probably my favorite sketch comedy show ever. I used to watch it religiously on MTV along with Beavis & Butthead. I've been pining for these DVDs for YEARS!!!!!! The State.comIf you watch Reno 911, you'll be familiar with a good portion of the cast. The non-regulars on the show have almost all made guest appearances. I noticed last night that Joe LoTruglio is a new cast member this season, too, which is cool. Anyway. GREAT news. Tags: awesometown, dvd news

We got a trailer for the new Chan-wook Park movie, Thirst!!!! Watch it on YouTube. Here's the first one-sheet/poster, as well: Plot summary, as copied off of Quiet Earth: Sang-hyun is a priest who volunteers his time conducting his ministry to patients in a small town hospital. Although well respected for his strong faith and dedicated service to those around him, he suffers from overwhelming feelings of doubt and despair about living in a world that seems to be drowning in suffering and death. With the hope of saving even one life, he volunteers to participate in an experiment to find a vaccine for a deadly virus and heads to Africa. But, the experiment fails and Sang-hyun is infected with the fatal disease.
Surprisingly, however, he recovers completely. News of his miraculous recovery spreads quickly, and devoted parishioners, thinking that he has the gift of healing, flock to his services. Suddenly, Sang-hyun relapses. He coughs up blood and dies, only to open his eyes the next day in dire need of shelter from the scorching sunlight…Starring Kang-ho Song and Ha-kyun Shin (both from Sympathy For Mr Vengeance and J.S.A.) as well as Ok-bin Kim (from Whispering Corridors 4: Voice). Fuckin' groovy. Tags: awesometown, movie news

When the Weinstein brothers broke out of Miramax and formed their own company, they were unable to bring the rights to all the Asian films with them for their Dragon Dynasty line. Some of the films stayed with Miramax. I thought I had read somewhere that the deal was that anything that had been given a theatrical release stayed with Miramax (like, say, Hero), but apparently that was not the case. BCI Eclipse has reached a deal with Miramax to release 25 of their Asian titles on DVD in the US and it looks like MOST of the ones listed were never released at all in the US, let alone theatrically. Most of them were acquired by The Weinsteins/Miramax and then promptly shelved and left to rot (which is one of the biggest reasons why Asian film fans have such a major dislike of the Weinsteins). But check out some of the titles listed in the article: My Wife Is A Gangster - One of my favorite Korean movies not directed by Chanwook Park. Yes Madam - Michelle Yeoh's first ever "action" role. You'd think she'd been doing it all along. Directed by Corey Yuen, who also directed The Transporter and a about 500,000 old Jet Li movies. Wheels On Meals - Great action comedy from Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. Prison On Fire 1 & 2 - Chow Yun Fat!!!!!!!!!! Wing Chun - Michelle Yeoh + Yuen Woo Ping!!!!!!!! Dragons Forever - Another Jackie/Sammo/Yuen film. Haven't seen it yet. Tiger On Beat - HEH! Dr. Wai In The Scripture With No Words - Jet Li, Colin Chou and Takeshi Kaneshiro in a movie by Ching Siu-Tung. Haven't seen it yet. The Touch - Crappy recent Michelle Yeoh movie. A representative from BCI has been responding to the comments on the article link above and one of his responses was: "It’s too early to give much in the way of specs, but I can tell you most of the films have been re-mastered in HD and the ones that are not will be re-mastered in HD. There should be English dubs for them all and they’ll be on there. If one doesn’t exist, we’ll create a new track. There are plans to have extra features on all of them too. More news to come as we get closer to the first release and we’ll announce the rest of the titles soon." Oh man. BCI is the company that's been releasing all the kickass Sonny Chiba boxsets where you get, like, 5 Sonny Chiba movies for $20. They're good quality releases at great prices. I am particularly fond of the Sister Streetfighter box (as my icon may have made obvious). This news is seriously fucking WIN. I'm trying not to get all insane with speculation about what the other remaining titles might be, but... Drunken Master 2? Supercop? Supercop 2? Swordsman 2? Fong Sai Yuk? I NEED remastered HD releases of these films. Not want. NEED. I hope this not showing all of the titles tease doesn't last too long. The waiting and not knowing is already killing me and I just fucking read the damn article 20 minutes ago. Tags: awesometown, dvd news

Gaze upon the cover art for the upcoming Dragon Dynasty release of Fist Of Legend, due out September 2nd: WOW. Look! There... doesn't seem to be any lame ass photoshopping! The cover actually looks... cool! And... no quotes from Brett fucking Ratner on the cover? Whoa! And, oh shit, they didn't change the name of the film, either! The special features don't really look all that exciting, with the exception of the Bey Logan commentary, of course, and maybe the deleted scenes, but this will be the first time this film has been officially available on DVD with the original audio and subtitles. Anywhere ever. Quite possibly the finest straight up martial arts film Jet Li has ever appeared in and it is currently only available in an edited, dubbed DVD format, unless you get a bootleg on eBay that was, I think, copied from a VCD. When the Weinsteins announced their plans to create Dragon Dynasty, immediately martial arts film fans everywhere started salivating over the idea of THIS film finally coming out in a proper manner. And now here it is. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $21.99. Or you can order it from somewhere else. Or you can buy it somewhere when it comes out. But do yourself a favor. Get it. Chow Yun Fat & Johnnie To. IT'S GONNA HAPPEN, RIGHT? Back in April was the last we heard anything about the upcoming collaboration between Chow Yun Fat and director Johnnie To. A collaboration which would be nothing short of a dream come true for yours truly. At that time, word was that To was set to make his American film debut with a remake of John Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge and it was probably going to star Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Chow Yun Fat. Well, in an interview on Ain't It Cool News, actor Tim Roth has stated that he will be working with Chow Yun Fat and Johnnie To!!! No mention of Bloom or Neeson, or even the movie title there, but... FUCK YEAH IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, SON!!I want this so bad, you guys. So so so so bad. I want Chow Yun Fat to be in something good and fucking awesome at least one more time. Just one more. And whenever this gets done... whoever ends up distributing it better give it a fucking theatrical release. Or else. Thanks to Kaiju Shakedown for the heads up. Finally! A days ago, when I was writing about The Machine Girl, I said that it was #2 on my list of films that I really, madly, deeply wanted to see behind the new Batman film. For some reason, I had completely forgotten about this Thai film Chocolate, that is actually probably tied for second place. Hopefully, the name of this movie sounds somewhat familiar to you because if it doesn't then that means you weren't paying attention to me. And if you weren't paying attention to me, then I am sad. And I am sad because I want your attention and will throw a fit if I don't get it. But just in case, let me jog your memory. Directed by Prachya Pinkaew, who also did Ong Bak and The Protector with Tony Jaa, Chocolate is a film about a young autistic girl who has a special affinity for M&Ms and beating the shit out of people. Apparently. If you haven't seen the trailer for this yet, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, go right here to YouTube and rectify that problem as soon as humanly possible. Witness the glory and the majesty of this Thai stunt team's works and how they bring the fucking awesome like so few others are capable. So, now, FINALLY, an english subtitled release of this film is coming out on June 3rd (the same day of the US release of The Machine Girl. COINCIDENCE?!?!?!?!) in Hong Kong. That means the disc is region 3, kids, which means if you can't play non-region 1 DVDs then you're stuck waiting for the Weinstein Company to get off their asses and do something with it out here. Have fun with that. The rest of us can pre-order the film now. In an effort to help facilitate the dissemination of true win, and to show what an awesomely generous person I am, I have gone to the trouble of searching for places to pre-order the film for you. I present those to you now: HK Flix - $15.95 YesAsia - $15.99 DVDAsian - $16.95 HK DVD Store - $14.75 That's all I've got currently. If any of y'all have a favorite place to order from that is taking pre-orders, please let me know. One more thing before I go. This is the HK version. There is currently a Thai DVD release of the film that is unsubtitled, so make sure you get the Region 3 Hong Kong version if you care about subtitles. Also, there are already bootlegs of this movie on eBay. Last I heard, these bootlegs had limited english subs. Probably poorly translated and probably not available for all the scenes. Of course, given the type of movies that Ong Bak and The Protector are, watching the film without subs might not be any kind of problem. I doubt the dialogue is really that important. You're an adult now, and you can decide for yourself how you feel about that sort of thing. I'm just passing along the info. Anyway, how badass would that be if you pre-ordered both Chocolate and The Machine Girl and they both arrived on the same day? I think I'll give it a try. Tags: awesometown, dvd news

Did you hear? Criterion is going Blu-Ray. Bastards. I love them. The initial releases will consist of: The Third Man Bottle Rocket Chungking Express The Man Who Fell to Earth The Last Emperor El Norte The 400 Blows Gimme Shelter The Complete Monterey Pop Contempt Walkabout For All Mankind The Wages of Fear Oh shit. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.OH SHIT. Chungking Express? Please tell me that they have some awesome special features that aren't on the shitty Miramax DVD. My desire to get on the Blu-Ray bandwagon has increased a bajillionfold. It's pretty revolutionary, actually. If you think about it. Are you like me? Do you just not really have time to post in your LJ much anymore? is work/school/whatever just taking up too much time? Fear not, good citizens of Internetsland, for I have a solution! POST ON YOUR DAYS OFF INSTEAD OF SLEEPING ALL GODDAMN DAY! Yes! It's really that easy! Look, I'm doing it now! Of all the movies in the world that I want to see right now, The Dark Knight is the one I want to see the most. I haven't watched that new trailer for it that just came out, and I'm not going to. Unless it plays before a movie in a theater. I don't want to see anything else, I want the rest to be a surprise. If I had to pick a second most desired film to see, it would probably be The Machine Girl, which is coming out on DVD on June 3rd. Remember? After that, my list gets a little murkier. The French horror film Inside is way up there, and I have it on DVD right next to me but I haven't had a chance to watch it now (IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS OR SO SINCE IT CAME OUT). Another film that is also way up there is the upcoming Tokyo Gore Police, made by the same lovely people that are behind The Machine Girl and the wonderful family film Meatball Machine (NOTE: That was sarcasm). Aaaaand I mention all this because Kaiju Shakedown just posted this tasteful and delicate poster for the movie, which got my geek nerves all a-tingle. If you're able to read, then you can probably see that the film stars someone named Eihi Shiina. Does that name sound familiar to you? It should. Here's a closer picture of her, found at Fangoria: Looks familiar right? Well, if you're having trouble placing her, it's probably because she hasn't really done a whole lot since about 1999. I mean, she's been in stuff, but nothing I've seen or heard a whole lot about. Anyway, yes, you do know her. You probably just don't recognize her without her leather apron. Yeah. You can watch the trailer for Tokyo Gore Police on YouTube if you'd like, but I warn you... it may cause you to foam at the mouth in anticipation. If you go to that Fangoria link, there are a couple more production photos that are probably not work safe, but may also inspire the foam. PS: Is it just me, or does Eihi Shiina look really goddamn hot in the leather apron scenes of Audition, but not so much at any other time? Tags: awesometown, movie news

EXACTLY what I needed today. Remember way back in September when it was being reported that Hong Kong director Johnnie To ( Exiled, Election) was "talking" to Chow Yun Fat about the two of them doing a movie together? Remember how fucking awesome that sounded? Well, according to The Golden Rock, this article here and this article here, both say that those plans are progressing. Neither of those sites are in English, so we'll have to take their word for it. It says that To is going to start shooting his english film debut, a remake of the French film Le Cercle Rouge by John Pierre Melville, in June, starring Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Chow Yun Fat, although apparently only Orlando Bloom has signed on and Liam and CYF are still in talks. Still. It looks like this is actually going to happen. FUCK YES. Tags: awesometown, chow yun fat, movie news, remakes

So I'm reading an interview with Simon Pegg from Entertainment Weekly transcribed over here in ohnotheydidnt, and aside from being awesome because Simon Pegg seems like such a cool guy, there are some things in there I was not aware of. 1) Run, Fatboy, Run was co-written by Simon Pegg and Michael Ian Black. Michael Ian Black being this guy: from The State (the best sketch comedy show ever) that used to be on MTV. I know he's done tons of other TV stuff since then, but I'm not all that familiar with it. 2) Simon Pegg appreciates a good romantic comedy. 3) The ORIGINAL (and the ONLY) Spaced is FINALLY FUCKING COMING TO DVD IN THE UNITED STATES! I KNOW, RIGHT?!?! And I quote: Your Spaced will finally be released on DVD in the U.S. in July, right?Nearly 10 years after it came out in the U.K. We've just been in the studio here in L.A. We had Matt Stone, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, and Diablo Cody do commentaries on it. We've got new artwork, some amazing quotes from some amazing people. Oh snap! Countdown until someone gets pissed at Diablo Cody's involvement in 3... 2... 1... Anyway, FUCK YES! That interview has plenty of quick cool bits, including a little about Star Trek (I read elsewhere that Pegg has signed a 3 film deal on that), the new Simon/Nick Frost movie and other stuff. Go read it. Tags: awesometown, dvd news

The first Dirty Harry movie is one of my all time favoritest movies of all time. I have the boxset and even though I am of the opinion that each movie was a little worse than the one before it, simply looking at it and caressing the side of it occasionally brings immense joy to my overly materialistic inner being. I mean, shit, it's a box of 5 movies that are full of Clint Eastwood saying funny lines and beating the crap out of people with funky music playing in the background. Shit, yeah. I was, in fact, smiling at it just the other day. Then, today, while TRYING to catch up on my friends list, I come across an announcement of a brand new, $75 Dirty Harry box set coming out in June. Damn you! Go over to DVD Active if you want to look at the release details. Suffice to say, it looks beautiful and infinitely superior to previously released box, and they all have commentaries, my one true DVD special features weakness. So now I am, AGAIN, faced with the dilemma. Do I buy the new shiny version and appease my base materialistic longings? Or do I stick with what I've got, save the money and just deal with the unending depression and the inevitable inferiority complex? Life is full of tough choices, but no one told me it would be like this. Tags: awesometown, dvd news, weaksauce
