From the outside, Tokyo Decadence looks and smells like the 1990s version of In the Realm of the Senses. It oozes with sex and social criticism alike, employing sleaze as a delivery mechanism for its deeper message. But while Senses...

Universal's new comedy Brüno topped the domestic box office with an estimated $30.4 million this weekend from 2,756 theaters, but was followed closely by Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in second place with $28.5 million. The Sacha Baron Cohen comedy started big on Friday with $14.4 million, but dropped to $8.8 million on Saturday and $7.2 million on Sunday - most films earn more or about the same on Saturday compared to Friday. Brüno opened bigger than Cohen's Borat , which made $26.5 million its first weekend, but that was only from about 800 theaters. Brüno should easily turn a profit for Universal, which paid $42.5 million for the rights to distribute domestically and in eight other markets. It made about $25 million internationally this weekend.

Stepping back

Before I start, this post - and every post on here, and anything I say on Twitter, or anywhere else - is entirely MY opinion. Nothing to do with the people I've worked with, or the BBC, or anyone else. I don't speak for any other writers, I *only* speak for myself, and I will not pass on any messages to anyone.

Here's my position: I'm not going get into any more discussions or debates about what happened in Torchwood this week (being vague, in case people come across this and haven't seen it). Not now, not in the future.

Why? I started trying to discuss it, but swiftly realised that it was pointless. It simply turns into "No it isn't" / "Yes it is", and there's no way I can win the argument, because in certain people's opinion, I am wrong, and that's the end of it. And it's all just opinion anyway. It would also feel like I was trying to justify the show, and I'm not doing that. I have absolutely no need to. The show is the show. Whether you like it or dislike it, that's up to you.
will probably have spoilery comments )

We weren´t very optimistic about the fate of Jonas Brothers´ JONAS… but we were wrong. Disney has picked JONAS for a second season and moved the shows to Sundays, pairing it up with Hannah Montana and Sonny With a Chance .

JONAS, the tween-idol band’s fledgling Disney Channel sitcom, is on the move from its original night and time to Sunday, where, presumably, iCarly can’t hurt it anymore.

Responding to an inquiry regarding the status of JONAS, which hadn’t aired a new episode in two weeks (after premiering only a month ago), the network said the show was getting a new home as part of a routine summer overhaul.

The Monkees-aspiring JONAS debuted May 2 before a solid 4 million viewers, only to get hammered by an iCarly special the following week.

Starting this weekend, the Jonases’ show, which formerly led off Saturdays, will be placed behind Sonny With a Chance, which itself will air after Hannah Montana, on Sundays.

According to Disney, JONAS was May’s top-rated TV show among children 6-11, who, unfortunately for the sibling stars, aren’t old enough to work for the New York Times—and lobby against articles that ask if their act is “fizzling.”

We were speculating about Jonas being cancelled, especially after how badly iCarly beat them up on the ratings in week two.

And alongside Jonas, there goes Rules of Engagement, How I Met Your Mother renewed and Gary Unmarried all heading towards renewal.

JONAS (previously J.O.N.A.S.) is an American Disney Channel Original Series created by Mantis Productions and It’s a Laugh Productions starring the Jonas Brothers. Kevin Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Joe Jonas appear as the Lucas Brothers, the three members of the fictional band “JONAS” who try to live a normal life in the face of stardom.

The family of one of daytime's most beloved, presumed dead antiheroines may be experiencing one romantic heartache after another on The Young and the Restless, but the woman who created the legendary role of ghetto urchin-turned-fashionista Drucilla Barber Winters couldn't be happier right about now.

On June 27, Victoria Rowell married famed, Atlanta-based, mixed media artist Radcliffe Bailey in Dublin, New Hampshire. The couple was surrounded by the women who raised Rowell, as well as numerous superstar friends, including Alfre Woodard and Samuel L. Jackson, the latter of whom gave Rowell away. Rowell and Bailey's wedding is featured in today's New York Times style section. Click here to check it out. Rowell's second book, the highly-anticipated novel Secrets of a Soap Opera Diva, is due to hit stands in 2010.

One of the stops on her book tour that July was the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. Ms. Rowell, who for several seasons was simultaneously on the prime time drama “Diagnosis Murder” and the daytime soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” was interviewed on stage at the festival by LaTanya Richardson Jackson, the wife of Samuel L. Jackson, with whom Ms. Rowell had appeared in the film “Home of the Brave.”

Will Johnny Depp portray Dean Martin in a new film?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Will Johnny Depp be tapped to play Dean Martin in a biopic of his life? Martin's daughter Deana reveals that Depp was her top choice to portray late singer Martin in a movie.

Deana acknowledged that a film is in the works, and will be directed by Joe Mantegna and written by comedian and actress Bonnie Hunt. Deana was speaking as a guest on a Boston radio program when she said, "[Depp] is a tremendous actor, he has that charm, that swagger, and the resemblance of my father is there. I’m sure he would do the role justice!”

Deana recently released a book called Memories Are Made of This, Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes and is a singer in her own right with a CD titled "Volare."

Anyone know if that's Jackie or Robert in that pic?

It's over - at least shooting is. I feel like I just ran a marathon. Though I will never know the actual feeling of finishing a marathon - I reckon this is what it feels like. Week after week of night shoots, distant locations and extreme weather, all taking its toll on all of us. Many of my other marathoners share the same 1000 yard stare I've got going. All of us simply spent.

But all that effort, time and pain was for a great cause. We did it all for Freddy. To realize our dream of bringing him back... the way we remember him. Scary, mean and nasty. Now I know it will be hotly debated here, but I can tell you I am proud of what we did. Proud that Jackie Earle Haley was uncompromising in his desire to create a Freddy that is uniquely his own creation. Proud of Andrew Clement for his desire to create a look that will shock and scare you. You will surely recognize Freddy, but he is distinctively different, more real, and more burned. Jackie and Clement spent four hours a day painstaking applying all the make-up, appliances, texture before coming to shoot. And when we were all done at the end of the day they had to stay for at least another hour to take it off. For those of you keeping score at home that is 5 hours a day, on top of 12 hour shooting days. Those among you who are so closed-minded that you can't fathom anyone else playing the role, you are idiots. So much time and effort put into bringing Freddy back and you dismiss him before you've seen his efforts, it's just stupidity. See what we've done and then pass judgment; but there isn't a person out there who can tell me Jackie isn't a terrifying, inspired, awesome Freddy. I am grateful to Bloody Disgusting for its early support of that idea and can confidently tell you that choice was simply inspired.

Sam Bayer suffered for this movie. He pushed himself so hard that I worried that he couldn't maintain his pace, yet he did. No one had more sleepless nights than Sam - replaying the day's events over and over in his head, questioning how to make it scarier, better. We would often have breakfast together before shooting and he was never content. If he was concerned that he could improve on a scare, he and our first ad, Myron, would figure out our schedule so we could shoot the scene until Sam felt it was as good as it could be. Sam has very high standards and he was unrelenting. He brought all his experience to those nightmares and they are outstanding - if you aren't familiar with his work, check him out on YouTube, he is a great visual artist.

Making movies is like riding a unicycle down a steep hill. And when I read this back it seems like this movie was a dream shoot. Not true - we had all sorts of challenges on every level, but what was great about making this film was that we all had the same goal in mind. It really felt like a team effort to get to the finish line. And for me personally, when the end did come I didn't want it to.

I know the blog has been quiet lately, but after I've rested a bit I will start posting more.

A couple other things. Pay attention to Comic Con, we will have a couple of surprises for you there. If everything goes as planned we will reveal something special there.

I'm all for giving Jackie a chance as the new Freddy--if anyone can do it, its him. But calling fans 'idiots' because they prefer the actor who made Freddy his own for seven films? Classy.

Botulinum toxin Type A (Botox) was primarily used to treat muscle spasms before gaining popularity as a cosmetic treatment.
Botox is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment administered by a doctor to treat frown lines. Botox works by reducing the contractions of the muscles that cause the frown lines that develop as people age. With appearance playing an important factor in their careers, many celebrities use Botox and aren't afraid to admit it.

Jenny McCarthy, 36, says she goes for Botox every 2 months, “My tricks are I get Botox in my forehead – I just have my doctor do a little shoter there. If you overdo, it looks bad.”

Vanessa Williams, 45, is a fan of Botox – even her character on Ugly Betty has her gay assistant give her Botox injections in her office. Vanessa gets injections in real life every 3 months.

Model Daisy Fuentes, 42, uses Botox, “There’s a right time for things like Botox as you get older.”

Lisa Rinna recently admitted to going overboard with Juvederm injections in her face. “In my family, it’s hereditary to have scowl marks between the eyebrows.” Lisa gets injections every 3 months.

Lori Loughlin is a Botox user. “It makes you look like you’ve been on a really nice vacation. Just really well-rested.”

Jennie Garth says she didn't have a good first experience with Botox. She told her doctor next time she wanted less. "I don’t want my face to change."

Linda Evangelista
openly talks her use of Botox. “How do other women feel when they see the pictures? Models are not superhuman. We grow old,” Linda says.

Jennifer Aniston has admitted she once tried Botox and wasn’t a fan. “I tried Botox once. I felt like I had a weight on my head. You see women, you know they’re not young, but you can’t tell how old they are.”

Pa. swim club accused of racism to ask kids back

PHILADELPHIA – A private suburban swim club accused of racism after it canceled the memberships of dozens of minority children says it will seek a meeting with the kids' camps to work out an agreement for them to return.

Amy Goldman, a member of The Valley Club, said those able to attend a hastily called meeting Sunday afternoon voted unanimously in support of reinstating the memberships of the Creative Steps day camp and two other camps as long as safety issues, times and terms can be agreed upon.

The Creative Steps camp had arranged for 65 mostly black and Hispanic children to swim each Monday afternoon at the gated Huntingdon Valley club, which is on a leafy hillside in a village straddling two overwhelmingly white townships. But after the group arrived June 29, camp director Alethea Wright said, several children reported hearing racial comments and some swim club members pulled their children out of the pool.

The camp's $1,950 was refunded a few days later.

The president of the swim club's board of directors, John Duesler, has said the decision was made out of safety considerations, not racial concerns.

"We have near-unanimous approval from our membership, so at this point we'll be figuring out ... how to approach all the camps and see how we can move forward," Duesler told WPVI-TV at the club's entrance on Sunday.

The swim club has claimed it has a diverse, multiethnic membership, but Goldman, a member for two years, said she couldn't remember seeing a black member this year. )

--

If I had kids, there is no way in hell I'd let them go back to that pool. NO WAY. This is purely face-saving.

Poor Farrah Fawcett. A month ago, People magazine's Larry Hackett admitted to the Times that she only had one remaining chance for some friendly press:
"At this point, Farrah has to die," he said. "It's the only cover left for her." Needless to say, she's missed her chance. Having vanished from the headlines after Michael Jackson's sudden demise, Farrah is just the latest to join a peculiar group: the Eclipsed Celebrity Death Club.

The classic ECD example is Groucho Marx, who passed away the same week as Elvis Presley, and thus missed out on a good week's worth of TV tributes. But the easiest way for a famous person to vanish from the earth without so much as a blip is to follow a president of the United States. Ray Charles caught barely a moment's coverage when he died in 2004, right in the middle of the weeklong blanket coverage of Ronald Reagan's death and funeral. Same story for James Brown, who got some press but definitely ran second to Gerald Ford. (The only person who could square off against a dead head of state, it seems, was Mother Teresa. When she died a few days after Princess Diana, a good deal of the coverage tried to frame them as comparably angelic figures.) And don't forget Alice Trillin—granted, not a worldwide celebrity, but a beloved figure to her husband Calvin's thousands of New Yorker-reading fans. While awaiting a heart transplant, she died on September 11, 2001, following the horrible deaths of thousands of New Yorkers. Most of her husband's readers only learned about it many months later, when he published About Alice.

The championship trophy for badly timed death, though, goes to a pair of British writers. Aldous Huxley, the author of Brave New World, died the same day as C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia series. Unfortunately for both of their legacies, that day was November 22, 1963, just as John Kennedy's motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository. Huxley, at least, made it interesting: At his request, his wife shot him up with LSD a couple of hours before the end, and he tripped his way out of this world. Which, if you're going to go to your reward without anyone's noticing, is probably not a bad way to end it all.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has pancreatic cancer and the illness is life-threatening, South Korean broadcaster YTN said on Monday based on information gathered by Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources.

Kim's health is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the reclusive communist state. Kim, 67, was widely thought to have suffered a stroke last year, but there has never been official confirmation.

Kim's health raises questions about succession in Asia's only communist dynasty and who will control its nuclear weapons programs.

The North conducted its second nuclear test on May 25, which was met by U.N. sanctions aimed at cutting off the impoverished state's lucrative arms trade and one of its few sources of hard cash.

South Korean officials have said the North's recent military grandstanding that also included missiles launches and threats to attack the South is linked to efforts to pave the way for Kim's youngest son to take over.

Kim took power in 1994 when his father died at the age of 82. He assumed the title of general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the National Defense Commission, but has never taken the title of president.

The climactic scene in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" takes place in one of those underground caverns with a lake and an ominous gondola as the means of transportation, popularized by "The Phantom of the Opera." At first I thought -- no gondola! But then, one appeared, dripping and hulking. In another movie I might have grinned, but you know what? By that point, I actually cared.

'True Blood' gets truly great with new episode
By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

Not that the first three episodes haven't been great, gory, sexy fantasy fun, or that it hasn't been a pleasure to see new characters arrive and new stories begin. But with Sunday's episode, the first this season written by creator Alan Ball, you can just feel the show's main plots kick into another gear.

Fuck you! That can be arranged... )

[Our thanks to Lauren Baggett for the following review.]

First off, to answer some of the most common questions about Sion Sono’s newest opus. Yes, it’s really four hours long with no intermission (we were all advised to take a bathroom break five minutes before the screening started). Yes, it’s filled with man-hating schoolgirls, kung-fu panty photography, and enough religious imagery to flood the Vatican twice over. More importantly, yes, it’s worth the hype. LOVE EXPOSURE is the film of Sono’s career. It’s also a love story, and a surprisingly sweet and touching one at that. I caught more than one person in the Fantasia audience sniffling by the end.

Over on Stargate's official website there are two video interviews with David Blue, who will be playing Eli Wallace in the upcoming Stargate Universe series.

Source.

No, this has nothing to do with Cliff not being on Ugly Betty. Blue talked about it on his blog, stating "I was cast in the role on 'SG:U' after I had already come back to LA from shooting 'Betty'. I'd love for Cliff to come back some day too! But as I've said before, I'm not nearly as cool as all the writers/producers of the show... so I haven't the foggiest idea if/when that'd happen. And to answer another question, of COURSE I'd love to come back to 'Betty' sometime. DUH! In the meantime, I'll keep my fingers crossed right along with you."

Here we are late Sunday night in Austin bracing for the first public screening of REC! Great to see this town finally get a dose of just how great of a little horror movie Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero have crafted, as well as experience a terrific performance by Manuela Velasco. I’m eagerly awaiting REC 2 which picks up two hours after this first film ends. I also can’t wait to see Luis Berdejo (write of REC) get his Jennifer Can horror film made.

I’ve gone back through all my images to see if I had missed posting any from this film and sure enough there were 12 I had yet to post and now they are up! Be sure to pick up the DVD tomorrow. I’m going to image the DVD from Spain has many more extras and all that but if you don’t have an all region player or way to watch a DVD from a different region then you will want the US version. Turn out the lights and pop it in!

Related Coverage:
::: Official Rec 2 Site
::: REC 2 on Twitter
::: Official Paco Plaza Blog
::: Official Jaume Balaguero Blog
::: <a href="http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/nifff-2008-jaume-balaguero-talks-rec-2/ target="_new">Interview I did w/ Jaume Balaguero on REC (Part 1) – Twitch
::: Interview I did w/ Jaume Balaguero on REC (Part 2) – Twitch
::: Interview I did w/ Jaume Balaguero on REC (Part 3) – Twitch
::: Pictures I took of cast and crew at Sitges 2007 – Twitch
::: Previous REC Movie Wallpaper (Cinema is Dope)

REC 2 was by far the most hard hitting, intense and best damn promo reel I saw at Cannes this year. Phil and I have been discussing my upcoming vacation to Boston and quite possibly a detour to New Jersey.
Nicole: If a creepy guy hits on me you'll punch them right?
Phil: That's not how it works. He and I will simply go into a collar-popping competition. I'll bring a bottle of fake tanning lotion for backup. Then after I win your affections with my douchebaggery we can take a picture of ourselves making a kissy face at the camera to celebrate our victory.
This is going to be the best vacation ever.

On Friday, San Diego Comic Con International announced updated Wednesday, Thursday and Friday line-ups for the 2009 convention. On Saturday they unveiled the Saturday schedule. And if you thought the Saturday schedule was television heavy, wait until you see the Sunday line-up.

Sunday is the last day of the convention, and is usually at a time when things begin to get depressing, but the line-up for the day is extremely lackluster. It’s mostly kids television programs like Phineas & Ferb, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan and Wonder Pets!, SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents, The Penguins of Madagascar, and Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. There are some programs for the teens/adults: Dr. Who, Smallville, American Dad, Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, Being Human/Torchwood, and Buffy the Musical. Mystery Team and Paper Heart are the only movie panels the entire day.

AUSTIN — Biographies of Washington, Lincoln, Stephen F. Austin? Not fit reading material for children in the early grades.

Cesar Chavez? Not worthy of his role-model status.

Christianity? Emphasize its importance.

Such suggestions are part of efforts to rewrite history books for the state's schoolchildren, producing some expert recommendations that are sure to inflame Texans, no matter their political leanings.

The State Board of Education expects to start discussing new social studies curriculum standards this week, with members of the public getting their first opportunity to speak this fall and a final board vote next spring.

The process is a long one with lasting impact: reshaping the social studies curriculum, including history, for 4.7 million Texas public school children.

“This is something that every parent would want to be paying attention to. This will determine whether or not the kids get the education needed to succeed in college and jobs in the future,” said Dan Quinn of the Austin-based Texas Freedom Network. “If we are going to politicize our kids' education, that will put our kids behind other kids when they're competing for college and good-paying jobs on down the road.”

Curriculum standards are updated about every 10 years; the last social studies update came in 1997.

You know, the nice thing about Zito starts is that it's enjoyable whether he wins or loses. He gave up not one, but two 3-run homers! I guess somebody already went on break. I was impressed that he can throw from the edge of right field to the the edge of left field in warm ups, though.

It was a beautiful day at the park, though, warm and sunny and it was completely packed. People (like me) like free shit.

Brian Wilson and Barry Zito

This makes me laugh hysterically. Then I start weeping.

The program I bought today was really good! Mostly because it's all about the pitchers, and I lurve the pitchers.

Matt Cain (unlike fucking Brian Wilson and Barry Zito) lives in the city! He has a house in Noe Valley with his fiancee. Apparently they moved to Marin but then missed the city, so they moved back. <3 <3 <3

They asked the starters to describe each other, and this is what they said:

Tim Lincecum
Cain: "Unorthodox"
Zito: "Loose" :( :( :( :( :( :(

Matt Cain
Zito: "Competitive"
Sanchez: "Cy Young"
Lincecum: "Corn-fed" OMG they love each other so much!

Barry Zito
Cain: "Rhythm guy" I don't quite know what that means but it upsets me.
Sanchez: "Smart" Oh no, he sounds like a Zeetling.
Lincecum: "Out there" *chortles*

Jonathan Sanchez
Cain: "Effortless" Matty is such a sweetie.
Zito: "Suave" Err, Rico Suave?
Lincecum: "Filthy" Again, uncomfortable.

Then there was an entire article about relievers, which can be summed up by Affeldt: "Bullpen guys tend to be a little bit... crazier." There was also something from Brian Wilson, where he demonstrates his ability to be a sensitive jackass:
"We get trashed nonstop in LA," says closer Brian Wilson. "We're told that each and every one of us is the worst pitcher in the world. Well, there's only one pitcher who can be the worst, so who is it? It doesn't bother me because I know I'm not the worst. Now come up with something better. So I have a Mohawk that looks like a mullet. Awesome. Well, that's not conducive to my pitching bad. What else do you have?"
