According to the message boards on Blu-Ray.com, the box includes Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, Sanshiro Sugata I & II, Sanjuro, Men Who Tread On The Tiger's Tail and The Bad Sleep Well. They'll be released individually as well as in the box.
No english subtitles.
This I find out just after Affenheim Theater and Wildgrounds both recently wondered aloud about Japanese films being released on Blu-Ray without english subs.
It's a sad state of affairs.
No doubt, Criterion will eventually get around to releasing most/all of these on Blu-Ray themselves, but who knows when that'll happen?
I have it on fairly good word that Criterion is in the process of negotiating for all of this stuff. HD format releases are not typically included in the same licensing agreements as SD material, so they have to do it separately.
I'd need to dig around a bit, but I recall there is a site (sites?) out there that makes subtitles tracks for films without. With some wizardry, and a Blue Ray burner (um...they're about a grand for now :[ )(borrow one?), you could rip n burn the movies with subs on them...
Again!? There was a hot shit DVD collection of every single Kurosawa film ever (literally, you know the one), but the subtitles were thrown about, some had English subtitles, some had French etc. So you'd have to be bilingual if you didn't know Japanese.
I almost died at the sight of such a sexy boxset, but man. How hard is it to subtitle.
You'd think it would be obvious. I think there'd be plenty of people willing to drop some serious money to import shit like this if they would just take that little extra step.
